Canisy is a commune in Northwestern France in the Manche department in Normandy. Canisy was liberated on July 26, 1944 during Operation Cobra which was General Omar Bradley's offensive which was to punch through the German lines on the Cotentin Peninsula and create a corridor through which the penned up Allies could break out of the bocage country and advance into Brittany. During this time the 347th Ordnance Depot Company was part of the U.S. First Army under Bradley. Canisy is located about 4 miles west of Saint-Lô which was the site of the aerial saturation bombing by the US Army Air Corps preceding this breakout.
